scrap mechanic split stack searches spike when Survival players hit inventory chaos: one giant tomato stack, one giant Component Kit pile, and no clean way to leave half at home for a corpse recovery. Scrap Mechanic inventory from Axolot Games (Steam 387990) rewards deliberate splits before farming, packing, and warehouse loops.
This page covers the split workflow, when to do it, how warehouse loot should be partitioned, and how co-op handoffs stop “who has the keycard?” disasters. Pair with controls for inventory binds, warehouse guide for loot priorities, and deposit tomatoes guide for packing crates. Verified August 16, 2026 · Steam.
A full stack feels efficient until you die. Then every Component Kit, seed, and tomato crate sits on a corpse halfway across a Tapebot warehouse. Splitting is insurance: half travels, half stays at the bed / Craftbot.
Splits also clarify intent. Travel food is not packing cargo. Warehouse seed finds are not raid-defense ammo. Mixing everything into one hotbar is how players deposit the wrong crates at the Packing Station.
Three bins that always help
Combat bin — Spud Gun ammo, repair blocks, bearings. Food bin — cooked snacks + water for the trip only. Progression bin — Component Kits, seeds, schematic-related parts headed home.
Why GSC mixed this with warehouse
Warehouse pages currently absorb split-stack impressions because loot overload happens there first. Dedicated split discipline belongs here; warehouse combat belongs on the warehouse guide. For wonk stack / cap questions see the wonk stack guide.
How to split item stacks efficiently
Exact click chords can vary after patches — always verify in Settings → Controls and the inventory UI. The workflow below is the durable part: decide the split size before you leave, not while Tapebots are shooting.
Do01Home cache chest exists next to the bed
Do02Travel food split off from bulk produce
Do03Component Kits never 100% on your corpse risk
Do04Hotbar reserved for weapons / tools, not crates
Do05Vehicle storage assigned a single loot job
Practical workflow
1. Stand at the Mechanic Station bed with Craftbot access.
2. Open inventory and identify stacks you cannot afford to lose entirely (kits, rare seeds, food).
3. Split each critical stack into travel portion + home cache.
4. Move home cache into a labeled chest / storage block near the bed.
5. Load only travel portions into the vehicle.
6. After a safe return, merge leftovers and re-split for the next goal.
Hotbar vs backpack
Hotbar holds what you will use in the next five minutes. Backpack / vehicle storage holds the rest. If your hotbar is full of tomato crates, you will not swap to Spud Gun fast enough in a raid — see controls for hotbar slot habits.
Vehicle storage as a third split
Treat the car as a mobile third bin: warehouse loot goes into vehicle crates; personal emergency food stays on your character. If the car flips, you still walk home with snacks.
When stack splits matter most
Not every inventory open needs a ceremony. These moments do.
Moment
Split for
Leave at home
Packing Station tomato run
One vehicle load of produce
Extra food + tools for corpse recovery
First warehouse clear
Ammo + repair + empty slots
Rare seeds already unlocked
Long map scout
Food + beacon materials
Bulk Component Kits
Co-op role swap
Role-specific tools only
Partner’s assigned loot type
Chapter 2 mine dive
Light combat kit + lamps/power
Surface farm surplus
Before deposit tomatoes
If packing crates and snack tomatoes share one mega-stack, you will eat the packing cargo or deposit the snacks. Split first — then follow deposit tomatoes guide.
Before schematic / crafting loops
Keep schematic-related parts and Component Kits in separate bins so Craftbot queues stay intentional. See schematic bot location and crafting guide.
Warehouse inventory discipline
Warehouses end more runs with full inventories than with empty health bars. Enter with empty slots. Exit with sorted piles — not a single unsorted blob.
Priority split after loot
While still inside a cleared room (not while Tapebots respawn): seeds → Component Kits → weapon parts → junk. Drop junk if slots run out. The warehouse guide loot section lists seed floors.
Two-trip rule
If the vault is fat, make two trips. Physics will punish a top-heavy truck faster than a Tapebot will. Split loot across trips the same way you split stacks at home.
Keycards are not stacking junk
Keep keycards in a reserved slot until the matching door opens. Do not bury them under tomato crates from a previous packing run.

Co-op multiplies inventory bugs. Without splits, two players both carry “some kits” and neither can craft the Spud Gun upgrade.
Role bags
Driver bag: repair blocks, bearings, mounted gun ammo. Runner bag: empty slots, keycards, seed priority. Quartermaster at base: Craftbot queues and home caches.
Voice checklist before leaving
Call stack sizes out loud: “I have 20 kits travel / 40 kits home.” Ambiguity causes double-spending and empty Craftbots.
Discord LFG tip
When posting LFG on Discord, mention who handles inventory quartermaster duty — warehouse clears go faster when one person owns the split rules.
Scrap Mechanic split stack FAQ
How do you split stacks in Scrap Mechanic?
On PC: open inventory → right-click the stack → choose Split → enter the amount (or drag half to another slot). Console players use the equivalent split prompt in the inventory UI. After Patch 1.0.5, re-check Settings → Controls if the chord changed. Then cache half at your bed and take only travel portions on warehouse runs.
How to split stacks in Scrap Mechanic on PC?
Same flow: inventory open → right-click stack → Split → confirm count. The controls guide lists hotbar and inventory binds if right-click opens a different menu.
Why should I split stacks before warehouses?
So a wipe does not delete 100% of Component Kits, seeds, and food. Empty slots also let you pick up vault loot without dropping keycards.
Do beginners need this?
Yes — even Day 2 runs benefit once you leave the crash site. Start with food + tool splits from the beginner guide stage.
Is split stack only for Survival?
Creative is more forgiving, but Survival is where corpse runs punish unsorted inventories.
What should never stay as one mega-stack?
Component Kits, rare seeds, keycards, and the only food supply for a long trip.
