This Scrap Mechanic crafting guide explains how Survival turns raw scrap into vehicles, defenses, and automation — from your first Mechanic Station through Craftbot tiers, Component Kits, Refinebot chains, and Cookbot food. Verified July 27, 2026 · Axolot Games · Steam.
| Station | Role | Unlock priority |
|---|---|---|
| Parts, blocks, tools, weapons | P0 — first after crash | |
| Scrap → refined blocks & materials | P1 — before big builds | |
| Food, hunger recovery, trader crates | P1 — before long raids | |
| Dressbot | Cosmetics & armor garments | P2 — after stable food |
Every Scrap Mechanic crafting run centers on the Mechanic Station — a garage POI that hosts your bots, stores upgrade terminals, and marks the first safe progression anchor after the crash. You cannot tier-up Craftbots in the field; you must return here (or build a linked outpost station later) to spend Component Kits and unlock new recipe pages.
The station also connects to story quests in the Logbook: "Getting Started," "Your First Car," and Mechanic Station tier milestones. Treat it as your factory floor — bots on the platform, chests for input materials, and a vehicle ramp for test drives.

| Terminal | Function | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Craftbot dock | Place and upgrade Craftbot tiers | Immediately after finding the station |
| Refinebot dock | Bulk material conversion | Once you hoard scrap faster than you build |
| Cookbot dock | Meals and packaged food | Before first overnight farm raid |
| Upgrade bench | Spend Component Kits on tier unlocks | Every time kits hit inventory cap |
Early quests may grant a Mini Craftbot — enough for hammer extensions and basic blocks, but not for engines or advanced interactive parts. Prioritize reaching the main Mechanic Station Craftbot dock; the full bot supports tier upgrades and longer recipe queues.
In co-op, one player can manage queues while others gather — leave signs or Logbook notes listing which tier you are pushing so teammates do not burn kits on cosmetic recipes.
Chapter 2 / 1.0 content adds expanded POIs including Master Mechanic Station variants and new bots like Ore Crusher, Battery Generator, and Freezer. These extend the same crafting loop: unlock tier → queue batch → haul output. See chapter 2 for new recipe families.
The Craftbot is the heart of Scrap Mechanic crafting. Each tier upgrade adds recipe pages: early tiers cover blocks and wheels; mid tiers unlock bearings, engines, and weapons; high tiers cover logic gates, drills, and warehouse tools. Upgrades require Component Kits plus sometimes specific blocks — check the terminal before farming.

| Tier band | Typical unlocks | Survival milestone |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1–2 | , wheels, , basic tools | First drivable car |
| Tier 3–4 | , , , parts | Farm defense & trader runs |
| Tier 5–6 | , , , | Automation & warehouse prep |
| Tier 7+ | Advanced blocks, , explosives, late Chapter 2 parts | Core dig & boss areas |
Open the Craftbot UI and queue multiples of anything you need more than once — ten , five , twenty potatoes for ammo. The bot crafts while you sleep or drive. Empty queues waste real-time; before every expedition, top up , , and .
Pin frequently used recipes in the Handbook (in-game) and mirror that list in your base chest labels so co-op partners drop off the right scrap.
Decorative parts, duplicate paint tools, and extra lifts clog tier progression. Skip cosmetic blocks until Tier 4+ engines are online. One lift, one connect tool, one weld tool — duplicates belong in warehouse loot chests, not fresh crafts.
Component Kits are the bottleneck every Scrap Mechanic crafting guide warns about. Nearly every mid- and high-tier recipe consumes kits — Craftbot upgrades demand them in bulk, and advanced interactive parts (controllers, sensors, mounted spudguns) eat them per craft.

| Source | Efficiency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Destroyed Farmbots | High | Raids + warehouse patrols — see farmbots |
| Warehouses & ruins | High | Chest loot; bring vehicle storage — warehouse guide |
| Trader orders | Medium | Repeatable crates; pairs with farming guide |
| Scrapyards & road loot | Low–medium | Good while traveling between POIs |
| Component Kit crates (world) | Variable | Mark on map beacons when found |
1. Craftbot tier to unlock engines and suspension · 2. Refinebot (if not world-looted) · 3. Cookbot for food security · 4. Logic/automation parts once farms run overnight · 5. Cosmetic Dressbot recipes last.
Hoarding kits without upgrading tiers stalls the whole run — if your queue still crafts wood blocks only, spend kits immediately on the next tier instead of banking for hypothetical late recipes.
Kits often pair with and on the same recipes. When farming warehouses, prioritize chests that mix all three; Refinebot can convert some scrap chains into glue inputs, but boards usually come from robot drops and trader packages.
Refinebot converts loose Scrap Mechanic resources into standardized blocks and refined mats — Scrap Wood → Wood Block 1, Scrap Metal → Metal Block 1, stone chains into concrete ingredients. Manual crafting in the hand menu works for one-offs; Refinebot batching saves hours once your vehicle hauls crate loads.
| Input (examples) | Output | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap Wood | Wood Block 1 / refined wood tiers | Frames, floors, raid walls |
| Scrap Metal | Engines, weapons, durable armor | |
| Scrap Stone / stone | Concrete ingredients | Warehouse-proof walls |
| Raw oil (with setup) | Fuel canisters | Gas engines, generator loops |
| Cotton / crop products | Garment precursors (with Cookbot chain) | Trader crates, Dressbot |
Dock Refinebot beside Craftbot at the Mechanic Station so refined blocks feed directly into the next queue. Late game, duplicate refining at an outpost near mines or forests to avoid hauling raw scrap across the map.
If your building guide project needs fifty Metal Block 1, refining beats searching ruins. If you need Warehouse Block or rare tiers, looting still wins — Refinebot cannot shortcut POI-exclusive materials.
Survival meters include Hunger and Thirst. Cookbot turns crops and foraged items into meals that restore health and keep stamina up during long warehouse pushes. Neglecting food forces early retreats; a stocked Cookbot queue is as important as a Craftbot queue before overnight farm raids.
| Recipe type | Ingredients (examples) | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Basic meal | Carrot, potato, redbeet | Cheap hunger fix after farming |
| Mid-tier meal | Tomato, broccoli, cotton recipes | Better restore; trader pack value |
| High-tier meal | Banana, blueberry, orange, pineapple | Raid-night recovery; high crate value |
| Packaged crate prep | Multiple crops + packaging chain | Trader orders & kit income |
Plant near water, harvest on a schedule, and queue Cookbot recipes before raid nights. Broccoli and pineapple grow slower but spike raid value — cook them into meals rather than losing crops to Totebots.
Designate one player as "quartermaster" — maintains Cookbot and Craftbot queues while builders tune vehicles. Communication reduces duplicate crafts and starving explorers.
Scrap Mechanic crafting recipes assume you know where raw mats originate. This table links gather → refine → craft without listing every Handbook entry — use it as a route planner before leaving base.
| Resource | Primary source | Crafting role |
|---|---|---|
| Wood / Scrap Wood | Forest, crash debris | Blocks, frames, early tools |
| Metal / Scrap Metal | Ruins, robots, mines (1.0) | Engines, weapons, tier walls |
| Stone / Concrete | Rock fields, refine chains | Heavy armor, warehouse interiors |
| Oil | Ponds, pumps, underground (1.0) | Fuel, chemical recipes |
| Chemical / Ember | Chemical lake, fires | Advanced blocks & explosives |
| Cotton & crops | Farming | Garments, food, trader crates |
| Component Kit | Robots, POIs, traders | |
| Battery | Crafting + world loot | Electric engines & logic setups |
The in-game Handbook lists exact counts per recipe. This site focuses on priority and chains — use the crafting calculator for recursive material math, or queue double what the Handbook shows for your first build.
1.0 adds underground mining, ice caves, and new refine loops (ore crusher, freezer). Update your Refinebot placement when you start hauling ember and rare ores — see chapter 2.
Use this priority list when are tight. Hover or tap any linked item for direct materials and the merged craft tree. It mirrors a standard Survival route aligned with the walkthrough and beginner guide.
| Phase | Craft first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Crash day | + bed + wheels | Mobility + respawn anchor |
| Station found | , , | First reliable car |
| Pre-farm | , ammo, simple walls | Raid defense |
| Mid-game | , , | Harvesters & auto doors |
| Warehouse | , explosives, spare wheels | POI clear speed |
| Late | , , | Automation & core dig |
Trader orders sometimes force a detour — if the next crate demands twenty tomatoes, pause engine upgrades and run farming guide cycles. Trader income feeds kits, which feed Craftbot tiers; the loop is intentional.
Once logic parts unlock, Scrap Mechanic crafting scales beyond manual queues. You are not required to automate early, but these patterns save time before Chapter 2 grinds.
Pair Dispenserbot with chests to feed Craftbot-adjacent builds — ammo potatoes, glue stacks, or fuel canisters routed to a workshop floor. See logic guide for sensor triggers that start/stop production when storage fills.
Tree and scrap collectors reduce Refinebot input grind. Automate collectors first on farms, then duplicate the setup at mining outposts. The crafting win is indirect: less time chopping = more time queuing tier upgrades.
Export a "factory shell" blueprint from Creative test worlds via mods / Workshop and import in Survival once kits allow — valid lazy shortcut for standardized bot layouts.
An automated crafting station at the Mechanic Station. Queue recipes, upgrade tiers with Component Kits, and craft while exploring. See Craftbot tiers above.
Destroy Farmbots, loot warehouses, complete trader orders, and search scrapyards. Prioritize raids once spud guns are online — farmbots.
Hand craft for emergencies; Refinebot for bulk scrap conversion into blocks. Always refine before large building projects.
The next tier you can afford — usually the one unlocking gas engines (mobility) then logic parts (automation). Tier gates beat individual luxury recipes.
Shared world progress — any player can add to the same station queues. Split roles: gatherer, refiner, quartermaster.
Creative gives infinite parts with no tiers. Survival requires kits, stations, and resource chains — this guide targets Survival on Steam.
