Scrap Mechanic is a physics sandbox from Axolot Games (Steam 387990) built around placing 400+ parts, wiring interactive blocks with the Connect Tool, and lifting entire creations with the Lift. Movement, inventory, crafting, and vehicle driving each use their own bind layer — and seated driving adds a second hotbar for buttons wired to your Driver's Seat.
This Scrap Mechanic controls guide lists default keyboard and mouse binds, deep-dives Connect Tool and Lift inputs, explains placement rotation keys, covers gamepad / Steam Input options on PC, and notes which actions only appear in keybinds.json. New players should skim this page, then follow the beginner guide for crash-landing priorities. Verified July 27, 2026 · Steam.
Always open Settings → Controls after Chapter 2 patches — Axolot occasionally adds Survival UI actions. In-game tooltips still show default keyboard glyphs even if you remap (a long-standing quirk noted in Steam discussions).
| Input category | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Movement | WASD, jump, sprint, crawl — on-foot only unless seated |
| Menus | Inventory (I), Handbook (H), Logbook (L), pause (Esc) |
| Hotbar | 1–0 and scroll wheel — tools, blocks, parts |
| Placement | Q / Shift+Q rotation when building from hotbar |
| Tools | Connect Tool wiring, Lift raise/lower, hammer repair |
| Seated | Driver camera toggle, creation hotbar for wired controls |
PC play assumes WASD + mouse — the layout Axolot Games tuned across Creative, Challenge, and Survival for a decade. Camera mouse-look matters when placing bearings under vehicles or aiming the Spud Gun during Farmbot raids; lower sensitivity if you overshoot Connect Tool dots on small logic builds.
Most binds appear in Settings → Controls with primary and alternate columns. A handful (Handbook, Logbook, hotbar scroll, Hide GUI) historically lived only in keybinds.json — see the rebind section if a listed action missing from the menu still works on your install.
On foot, W A S D moves, Space jumps, Left Shift sprints, and Left Ctrl crawls under low gaps — crawl disables while seated. V or Middle Mouse toggles camera modes on foot; seated drivers use Left Ctrl instead for driver/passenger camera swaps.
Third-person zoom uses X or Alt + scroll. Pull back slightly when wiring under a car chassis so Connect Tool orange dots stay visible — tight zoom causes mis-clicks that disconnect entire engine lines.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| W / A / S / D | Move forward / strafe |
| Space | Jump |
| Left Ctrl | Crawl (on foot, not seated) |
| Left Shift | Sprint (on foot) |
| Mouse | Look / aim camera |
| X | Zoom in (third person) |
| Alt + Scroll Up | Zoom in (alternate) |
| Scroll Down / Alt + Scroll Down | Zoom out |
I opens inventory (alternate B on some configs). Drag parts to your hotbar before leaving the crash site — you cannot craft without hammer and lift tools accessible on 1–3.
H opens the Handbook anywhere, even without the item in Survival. Use it for bearing diagrams, logic gate truth tables, and thruster notes while the logic guide on this wiki covers advanced automation patterns.
L opens the Logbook in Survival after restoring power on the crashed maintenance ship. It tracks in-game time, quest destinations, and beacon waypoints — essential for warehouse guide routing once you unlock distant POIs on the map.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| I | Inventory (alternate: B) |
| H | Handbook — in-game build reference |
| L | Logbook — Survival waypoints & time (after unlock) |
| Esc | Pause menu |
| Enter | Open chat |
| Alt + Z | Hide HUD (keybinds.json only by default) |
Number keys 1 through 9 and 0 (slot ten) select hotbar items. Scroll wheel cycles tools without opening inventory — critical mid-combat when swapping Spud Gun → hammer → lift during raids covered in the farming guide.
Survival limits stack sizes; Creative grants unlimited parts — hotbar workflow is identical, but Creative players often bind paint and weld tools on high slots for workshop screenshots shared on mods.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 – 9 | Select hotbar slot 1–9 |
| 0 | Select hotbar slot 10 |
| Scroll Up | Previous hotbar item |
| Scroll Down | Next hotbar item |
Every Scrap Mechanic vehicle, farm trap, and warehouse rig lives or dies on two tools: the Connect Tool (wiring) and the Lift (physics staging). Master these before reading advanced building guide blueprints — reversed bearings and forgotten lift capture cause more "my car is broken" posts than missing engines.
| Tool | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Connect Tool + LMB drag | Connect interactive part dots (engine → bearing, seat → button) | |
| Connect Tool + RMB on bearing | Toggle bearing rotation direction | |
| Connect Tool + Shift | Reverse bearing direction (alternate) | |
| Lift + LMB | Place lift / capture creation onto lift | |
| Lift + RMB (hold on lift) | Remove lift / release captured creation | |
| Up Arrow | Raise lift height | |
| Down Arrow | Lower lift height | |
| Hammer + LMB | Repair blocks and parts | |
| Hammer + RMB | Demolish blocks and parts |
Equip the Connect Tool from your hotbar. Orange dots appear on interactive parts — engines, bearings, buttons, sensors, seats, controllers. Click and drag from one dot to another; a line with arrows shows control flow (controller → action part).
To disconnect, drag the same link again or drag off into empty space — the latter is faster when stripping a bad logic line before a raid. Number badges show seat/controller slot order; mismatched order makes Driver's Seat button 1 fire the wrong bearing.
Right-click a connected bearing toggles rotation direction. Steam community threads repeat this fix for tutorial vehicles that spin in place — front steering bearings should turn the way you expect when holding A/D in the seat. For precise angle sequences, open the wired Controller or engine UI with E and program steps (see logic guide).
Left-click places the Lift on flat ground. Stack blocks and parts on top, then use Up Arrow / Down Arrow to raise or lower the platform — essential for welding undercarriages and attaching downward-facing thrusters.
Left-click a creation while holding Lift to capture it; place the Lift again and the build rides along — perfect for flipping raid trucks or moving a half-finished harvester without dismantling. Right-click (hold) on the Lift removes it or releases a captured build.
In Creative, press E on an empty Lift for Blueprint / Workshop save and load. In Survival, lifts are crafted tools — treat capture mechanics the same when righting Farmbot-damaged vehicles. Haybots and Totebots can knock the lift down one stage per hit if you stand on it; press Up Arrow to recover height.
Hammer: LMB repairs, RMB demolishes — demolish returns parts in Survival when rules allow. Weld Tool fuses adjacent blocks (Creative staple, limited Survival recipes). Paint Tool uses Q / scroll variants for color GUI when equipped. Spud Gun uses standard LMB fire — bring one to warehouse guide runs before Tapebots corner you.

Building is not a separate "build mode" toggle — select blocks or parts on your hotbar, aim with the mouse, and left-click to place. Q and Shift + Q rotate the ghost preview; Shift + scroll rotates when Q feels awkward on large warehouse floors.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Q | Next rotation when placing blocks/parts |
| Shift + Q | Previous rotation |
| Shift + Scroll Down | Next rotation (alternate) |
| Shift + Scroll Up | Previous rotation (alternate) |
| Left Mouse Button | Place block / primary tool action |
| Right Mouse Button | Secondary tool action / remove paint / toggle bearing direction |
| E | Use / interact (terminals, seats, craft bots) |
Rotate before placing heavy blocks on narrow bearings — fixing orientation after placement means hammer-demolish and rebuild. Orientation blocks (see building guide) reduce guesswork on angled wings and drill rigs introduced in Chapter 2.
When precision stacking on a Lift, lower the platform (Down Arrow) until the preview snaps cleanly — floating previews explode on first engine start if collision resolves badly.
E interacts with Craft Bots, Refine Bots, Cook Bots, and Mechanic Station terminals. Queue recipes from the crafting guide before long AFK refine cycles — inventory full errors still tick time while you are wiring logic doors.
Enter opens chat for co-op coordination — call Farmbot wave direction, warehouse loot assignments, or who drives the escape car. Steam invites handle join; see Discord for finding persistent squads when friends are offline.
Enter a Driver's Seat or passenger Seat and controls split: WASD (or wired keyboard emulation) drives connected bearings/engines, while a creation hotbar fires buttons, switches, and pistons linked to that seat. This is the #1 confusion point after Connect Tool basics — your 1–0 keys may trigger seat actions, not inventory tools, while seated.
| Context | Input | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Left Ctrl (seated) | Change camera mode (driver/passenger) | |
| W A S D / mouse (seated) | Driving and seat-linked controls per connection | |
| Creation hotbar 1–0 | Triggers buttons/switches wired to seat (see keybinds.json C_Item slots) | |
| Left / Right Mouse (seated) | Attack / Create actions mapped to creation hotbar slots 1–2 |
Left Ctrl while seated swaps camera modes for driver and passenger views — use it when backing warehouse trucks or aligning drill attachments in Chapter 2 mines. On foot, V / middle mouse handles camera instead.
The K key binds to a "Stuck" action in keybinds.json on many installs — community use varies. If your vehicle flips, Lift capture beats hammering every block. For achievement hunters tracking distance driven, see achievements after fixing steering binds.
Scrap Mechanic shipped keyboard-first for years; gamepad play on PC typically runs through Steam Input community layouts until native 1.0 controller prompts fully roll out on the standard branch. Steam's controller config browser lists dozens of player-made profiles (Xbox, DualSense, Switch Pro, Steam Deck) mapping sticks to WASD and face buttons to mouse clicks.
Treat gamepad as supported via Steam, not as a fixed official layout printed on a poster. The 1.0 Chapter 2 testing branch has been used to trial improved menu navigation and analog driving — check Steam → Properties → Betas if prompts still show keyboard glyphs on your pad.
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Native layout | No single published Xbox sheet — use Steam Input community configs |
| Steam Input setup | Steam → Scrap Mechanic → Controller → Enable Steam Input → Browse configs |
| Popular profiles | Search "Scrap Mechanic Essential" or recent 1.0 configs with high playtime |
| Steam Deck | Use community Deck layouts; expect menu tinkering for lift and connect precision |
| Driving mode shifts | Many configs add a "driving" action set (triggers = forward/back) |
On-foot movement and camera on sticks feel natural once deadzones are tuned. Lift up/down and Connect Tool precision remain harder than mouse — some players map lift to shoulder buttons via Steam Input action layers.
Menu-heavy sessions (craft bot queues, Mechanic Station upgrades) benefit from configs advertising improved D-pad navigation — still slower than keyboard for hardcore Survival progression.
Prioritize inventory, Interact (E), Connect Tool primary/secondary, and lift raise/lower on comfortable buttons before attempting logic-heavy Creative builds. Copy keyboard muscle memory too literally and you will fight analog deadzones on bearing micro-adjustments.
Mixed-input co-op works on Steam — one keyboard builder and one pad driver is common for warehouse escort runs. Agree who owns Lift capture before the run; pad players should still know Up/Down Arrow equivalents on their layout to recover flipped cars mid-raid.
Open Settings → Controls in-game to remap most actions — double-click a bind field and press the new key or mouse button. Alternate columns let you keep I and B both open inventory, for example.
Some binds (extra hotbar layers, Hide GUI, creation hotbar C_Item slots) live in keybinds.json under `%AppData%\Roaming\Axolot Games\Scrap Mechanic\User\User_<id>\`. Back up the file before editing; saving as `keybinds.json.txt` silently breaks loading.
UI tooltips may still say "Left Click" after you swap mouse buttons — Steam threads document this for years. Trust your remap, not the stale prompt. Side mouse buttons sometimes register as Alt+Shift+LMB in the menu; community workaround: bind using Alt+LMB trick or edit JSON directly for MB : 3 / MB : 4 lift controls.
JSON entries map action names (LiftUp, LiftDown, Handbook, Logbook, SelectHotbar1, C_Item0, etc.) to key codes or mouse buttons (MB : 0 = left click). Third-party editors like the Scrap Mechanic Keybinds Editor help when you need different binds for regular hotbar vs creation hotbar — the in-game menu often mirrors both.
Left-handed players frequently move Forward/Strafe to arrow keys via JSON when the options menu fights Windows sticky keys — export defaults first so you can revert.
Rename `keybinds.json` to `keybinds.bak` and relaunch to regenerate defaults — or pick Default in settings (note: some custom JSON values persist until the file is removed). After Chapter 2 updates, verify Logbook and new Survival actions still bind correctly.
W A S D to move, Space to jump, Left Shift to sprint, Left Ctrl to crawl on foot. Seated players use Left Ctrl to change driver/passenger camera.
Equip it, drag between orange dots on interactive parts to connect, drag off to disconnect. Right-click bearings (or Shift per default binds) to flip rotation direction. Open wired Controllers with E for timed sequences — see logic guide.
Up Arrow raises, Down Arrow lowers while the Lift is placed. LMB captures creations; RMB on the Lift removes it or releases captures. Farmbots can knock the lift down — press Up Arrow to recover.
Yes — Settings → Controls for most actions. Advanced binds (Hide GUI, separate creation hotbar) edit keybinds.json in AppData. Back up before editing.
On PC, use Steam Input community configs for Xbox/DualSense/Deck pads. Keyboard/mouse remains the primary layout; 1.0 branches test improved native prompts — browse Steam controller configs with high playtime ratings.
Bearing rotation direction is wrong. Connect Tool equipped → right-click each wheel bearing until both sides match forward drive. Common fix referenced in Steam tutorial threads.
I (or B) inventory · H Handbook anywhere · L Logbook in Survival after the crash ship terminal quest. Logbook manages beacons and in-game time for walkthrough routing.
Yes — seated creation hotbar slots trigger wired buttons/switches, not your tool belt. Exit the seat to swap hammer, lift, and Connect Tool on 1–0.
