Scrap Mechanic is a physics sandbox survival game from Axolot Games (Steam app 387990, 1.0 Chapter 2 launched July 24, 2026). You crash-land on an automated farming planet, gather scrap, craft vehicles from 400+ parts, defend crops from rogue Farmbots, and push into warehouses with friends in online co-op.
This Scrap Mechanic beginner guide covers crash loot, Hammer and Lift basics, hunger and thirst, your first wheeled car, starter farming, and Mechanic Station tier unlocks — the habits that stop early wipes. Pair it with the walkthrough for day-by-day routing, the building guide for vehicle physics, and controls for keybinds. Verified July 27, 2026 · Steam.
Start with crash loot in the next section — the first hour decides whether night one is a wipe or a clean respawn.
| System | Beginner priority |
|---|---|
| Crash loot | , , , buckets — skip junk like radios early |
| Survival meters | Hunger and thirst drain while exploring — carry food and soda/milk |
| First vehicle | Wheels + engine before expanding base — travel speed saves hours |
| Farming | Soil, seeds, water, fertilizer — farming guide |
| Mechanic Station | Tier upgrades unlock Craft Bot recipes — crafting guide |
| Farmbot raids | Haybots target crops at night — budget defenses before scaling fields |
| Warehouses | Wait for tier-2 parts + combat vehicle — warehouse guide |
Every Survival run starts at your burning crash ship. The intro is short: wake up, put out fires with water buckets, and loot the interior before the first night. Worlds are procedurally generated, but the crash ship, nearby starter farm shack, and first road toward civilization appear in consistent spots — use smoke from the wreck as a landmark when you wander.
Once the hull is cleared, read hunger and thirst next — meters drain faster than new players expect once you leave the crash zone.

Hold right-click to pick up loose items. Priority pickups: , , , buckets, and any wheels or you find in crates. Skip low-value clutter like radios or duct tape until inventory space matters.
You can also dismantle interior wall lights and scrap blocks with the Hammer — early wood and metal stacks fast. Large pieces that do not fit in your inventory can stay near the ship until your first vehicle hauls them back.

Walk the full perimeter before following the road. Exterior loot boxes often hold extra seeds, soil bags, or a lucky wheel. The ruined building and starter farm area with a tutorial plot sit within walking distance — find the lake and star-marked shack to learn crop basics before committing to a distant base.
Buckets of water extinguish interior flames. Once stabilized, interact with the ship console — it tracks early Getting Started objectives and points you toward the nearest Mechanic Station along the road. Treat the ship as a temporary staging base until your bed respawn point moves to a safer garage.
Unlike Creative mode, Survival tracks health, hunger, and thirst. Sprinting, fighting, and long hikes drain food and water faster than new players expect — the beginner guide rule is to never leave base without snacks and a drink.
Master the three core tools next — Hammer, Lift, and Connect Tool gate every vehicle and base build.
| Meter | What drains it | Beginner fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger | Exploration, combat, sprinting | Carrots, broccoli, cooked meals from Cookbot |
| Thirst | Same + hot biomes | Soda, milk from cows — lake water is NOT drinkable |
| Health | Farmbot hits, falling trees, explosions | Food, medical kits, respawn at bed |
| Respawn | Death without bed = crash ship | Place or claim a bed to set spawn point |
You cannot drink raw lake water — fill buckets for watering crops only. For thirst, grab soda from ship loot or milk cows by placing corn on the ground nearby. Different crops restore hunger at different rates; save carrots early for fertilizer instead of eating them all.
Crafting a bed requires pigment from flowers at a Craft Bot, or you can claim beds found in the world. Interacting with a placed bed sets your respawn — critical before warehouse runs or deep mine trips where death means a long walk back.
Running low on both food and water slows you dramatically. If a Haybot chase starts while meters are red, disengage toward your vehicle rather than fighting — starving mid-combat is a common Day 2 fail state.
Three tools define every Scrap Mechanic build. The places and removes blocks. The raises, lowers, and precision-moves creations. The wires interactive parts — engines to bearings, sensors to logic gates. Master these before chasing advanced automation.
With tools equipped, build your first car before expanding the map — foot travel wastes the daylight you need for station upgrades.
| Tool | Primary use | Beginner tip |
|---|---|---|
| Place/remove blocks, rotate with Q | Hold Q while placing to orient wedges and slopes | |
| Raise creations, fine-tune height | Lift entire vehicles to swap wheels without rebuilding | |
| Connect interactive parts | One wrong wire can spin your whole car — test with engine off | |
| Smash scrap nodes, combat | Needed for special rock nodes later — craft at station | |
| Paint Tool | Color blocks | Optional until you need pigment for beds |
Right-click places blocks; left-click removes them. Press Q to rotate the ghost block before confirming — essential for wedge ramps and vehicle frames. Scrap pieces from ruined buildings dismantle in one hit, making the Hammer your fastest early resource tool.
The Lift tool grabs connected structures and moves them vertically. Use it to adjust a crooked car chassis or relocate a crop box without losing connections. In 1.0, pairing Lift with a mobile garage prevents rebuilding entire rigs after every mine trip.
Interactive parts — bearings, engines, sensors, buttons — require Connect Tool links. Click the source, then the target. If a vehicle spins uncontrollably, disconnect the last wire and verify engine direction. Full logic patterns live on the logic guide.
Foot travel across the survival map wastes daylight. Your first milestone after crash loot is a simple wheeled car: frame blocks, four wheels, a , and a connected with the . Even a ugly scrap-mobile beats walking to the Mechanic Station.
After the car survives a test drive, start farming near base — but budget defenses before you plant every seed.

| Part | Role | Craft note |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden block frame | Chassis | Scrap wood from trees — refine at station later |
| Wheel | Movement | Most important early drop — grab every wheel at crash |
| Control direction | Connect to for steering | |
| Power | Needs gasoline from refined oil — bring fuel on long trips | |
| Steering axle | Connect engine → bearing → wheel chain |
Build a flat rectangle, attach on the front axle, mount wheels, place a on top, and connect a to the drive axle. Test in open ground before adding (covered in the building guide).
The Craft Bot at your Mechanic Station queues component recipes. Early crafts: connectors, , , and spare wheels. Queue items before gathering so you return from a scrap run straight into assembly.
If you only found one or two wheels, build a smaller cart or postpone the road trip until exterior crates deliver a full set. Some players piston-walk short distances — workable but slow. Do not attempt warehouse distance until the car survives a Haybot bump without flipping.

Farming feeds your hunger meters and fuels trader orders, but it also paints a target on your base. Haybots exist specifically to destroy crops — especially large fields at night. Start small near the tutorial shack, learn water and fertilizer timing, then scale with defenses.
Station tier upgrades unlock the Craft Bot recipes that turn farm income into combat gear — follow the road console before warehouse prep.

| Step | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Place soil in crop box slot | Empty plot ready for seed |
| 2 | Plant seed, fill bucket from lake | Dark soil = watered |
| 3 | Add fertilizer (from carrots) | Green bubbles — faster growth stages |
| 4 | Harvest at final stage | Food + seed returned for replanting |
| 5 | Defend before expanding | One hit can wipe an undefended plot |
Side-by-side tests show crops grow slowest with no water, faster with water alone, and fastest with water + fertilizer. Fertilizer comes from carrots — resist eating your entire carrot stock on Day 1. Replanted seeds return after harvest, so one box can sustain a solo player indefinitely if protected.

Haybots patrol crop areas with pitchfork melee. Larger farm clusters attract more frequent attacks — in 1.0 Drilling Thunder, raids can trigger roughly one minute after warnings, so turrets and traps must be pre-armed, not built mid-fight. Full raid math: farming guide.
Feed cows corn on the ground for milk (thirst). Feed glowbugs cardboard to collect glow poop for glow sticks — essential for cave and warehouse runs without burning fuel on headlights. These side loops matter once your main crop box is stable.
The Mechanic Station is your permanent progression hub — a garage with a console that unlocks Craft Bot tiers, Refinebot, Cookbot, and Dressbot recipes when you spend Component Kits. Following the road from the crash ship leads to the first station; later biomes hide upgraded stations with deeper tech trees.
Pick your game mode deliberately if you prototype builds — Survival for progression, Creative for wiring practice.

| Station bot | Function | Unlock priority |
|---|---|---|
| Craft Bot | Parts, tools, weapons | Always first — vehicles and connectors |
| Refinebot | Scrap → refined materials | Before bulk warehouse loot hauls |
| Cookbot | Meals, better hunger restore | After steady crop income |
| Dressbot | Cosmetic outfits | Low priority unless chasing achievements |
| Packing Station | Produce crates for traders | Mid-game order fulfillment |
Each station tier demands Component Kits plus specific materials. Upgrade in order — skipping tiers locks recipes you need for warehouse doors, drill heads, and logic parts. The walkthrough lists which tier gates which POI.
Raw scrap wood, scrap metal, and scrap stone from the field refine into build-grade materials. Oil becomes gasoline for engines. Queue refines before sleeping so morning craft sessions start with clean inventory — details in the crafting guide.
Chapter 2 rewards mounting a Craft Bot on your exploration vehicle — scan, unlock, and craft at abandoned mines and grow labs without returning to base. This mobile-base tip cuts logistics fatigue and is the bridge between beginner survival and mid-game walkthrough routes.
Scrap Mechanic ships three modes. New players should learn mechanics in Survival — the mode this guide targets — then use Creative for blueprint testing and Challenge for curated logic puzzles.
Use the first-day checklist below to confirm nothing critical slips before nightfall.
| Mode | Best for | Beginner note |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Campaign progression, co-op, raids | Default — hunger, Farmbots, warehouses |
| Creative | Unlimited parts, Workshop builds | No raids — practice Connect Tool wiring safely |
| Challenge | Puzzle levels, timing trials | Optional — teaches logic without open-world pressure |
Stuck on a vehicle joint or logic circuit? Prototype in Creative, export the blueprint, then rebuild in Survival with real material costs. Challenge maps teach specific interactions — pistons, sensors, timers — that transfer directly to farm automation.
Survival supports online co-op on Steam — one friend on vehicle duty while another crafts at the station doubles Day 1 progress. Host saves the world; joiners should still place their own bed near the shared garage. LFG channels: Discord.

No — lake water fills buckets for crops only. Drink soda or milk (feed cows corn) to restore thirst.
Survival teaches hunger, Farmbot raids, and Mechanic Station progression. Creative is unlimited parts for practice builds — no raids or story POIs.
Haybots attack crops, especially at night and near large fields. In 1.0, raid warnings can escalate within about a minute — build defenses before scaling farms. See farming guide.
Follow the road from the crash ship — the first station is always reachable by car within the opening hours. More stations unlock in later biomes on the map.
Chapter 2 / Drilling Thunder (Jul 2026) adds mines, grow labs, faster raids, mobile crafting, and new bot variants. Overview: Chapter 2.
Follow the walkthrough, tune vehicles in the building guide, and prep defenses in the farming guide.
